Our History
The RM of Coldwell formed the Lundar Agricultural Society March 9, 1927. The first fair was held in the fall and had exhibits of flowers, vegetables, grains and grasses. The Fairs were first held at the school with exhibits of heavy horses, driving horses, cattle, garden produce, grain, women’s section exhibits of sewing, canning and flowers. Exhibits were displayed on boards laid on the school desks and the livestock shown on school grounds.
The fairs were held until 1933 ,and came to a halt due to the depression followed by the war. In the winter of 1952 the organization reorganized. A board was elected, 14 members, and 238 memberships sold. September 17, 1953 the fair began again. For a few years the fair was held in June for livestock and August for garden, grain and flowers exhibits.
Since 1960 the fair has been held on June 11th with a parade, 4-H rally and Cattleman’s Jamboree in the evening; this continued until 1964. The fair then became a two day event – Friday and Saturday – the second weekend in June which it continues doing at present time.
The fireworks display was introduced in 1965 and the first fat stock show and sale was held in 1969. The Miss Interlake pageant was also added at that time. In 1970 a baby show and free pancake breakfast were held. In 1978 and 1979 saw a grandstand and lunch facilities built.
The Lundar Agricultural Society has fostered and encouraged excellence in household arts, cattle and horse classes by sponsoring the fair annually with the exception of the war years. The quality of the exhibits has remained consistently high over the years and the fair is rated as one of the best in Manitoba.
